Club 5k Series

The Course

The course is a flat, out-and-back route along the A40 (Northern bypass) cycle path between Marston and North Oxford. It starts on the North bound entry slip road - just beyond Elsfield Rd into Old Marston ~50 metres past the HRR time trial start. The turn-around point is the 2nd lamp post after the cycle bridge which crosses the bypass at Cutteslowe. The turn is at the halfway point. The course has been measured by Mike Sandford and certified as accurate.

The markings are all in bright yellow

Entry

Just turn up on the day and run. Entry is free to all club members Guests are welcome to run, though not eligible for the series prize, and we suggest guests make a small donation to OXSRAD in lieu of an entry fee. All entrants should report to OXSRAD to collect a number and to record their ages on the entry sheet. You can keep the same number for all the races in the series.

There is no requirement to commit to join the series in race 1 in any given year - runners can simply turn up and to any round. Similarly there is no expectation that any participant will compete in subsequent races in the same year.

When are the races?

The races are run over the summer - the races will be posted to the events diary closer to the time, so please see there for dates/details.

Why do them?

They are great racing practice and 5km is a good distance as it allows reasonably rapid recovery. We have a deficit of 5km races in the County and, as most of the championship relays are held over 5km, we felt it was a good chance to help train for these events.

Results

These are calculated as both straight times and also on an age-graded basis. Results will appear on the web site and in the club newsletter. A trophy is awarded each year to the best overall age-graded performance.

Age Graded Scoring

Age graded scoring attempts to take into account the effects of ageing on athletic performance. An age-graded score for any race performance is calculated by taking the ratio between a nominal world best time for the event undertaken (based age and gender) and the time taken for the particular instance. This is then expressed as a percentage - unless the performance is better than the nominal best performance this score will be less than 100%.

This requires a set of data representing the best performances based on age and gender. WAVA (World Athletics Veterans Association)/WMA (World Masters Athletics) has collated such a dataset. There are two groups of data - known as the 1994 and 2006 factors. The HRR results are based on the 1994 5km data - this allows comparison with all previous years. In the 2006 dataset there is a specific 5km road category - this will typically produce a slightly higher score than the 1994 factor calculation. There are a number of calculators available on the internet that can be used for either set of factors e.g. 1994, 2006
