| Brief Route Description: | The ultimate Headington Hill Run: 8 ascents and descents |
| Distance: | 9 miles |
| Detailed Route Notes: | This is an old standard run for those training for hilly longer runs or as a serious warm-up to XC training. It's an out and back run that can be 'turned around' at any point along the route. Basically, if you look at the profile, its about the hilliest long run around Headington you can do, taking in the Hill a total of 8 times if you do the full run! Effectively, its an out and back route, wherein you do each route on the hill twice, one as an up and once as a down. The full route is feasible only in the light as it goes up Harberton Mead and up through either the path alongside Headington Hill Park or through the park itself, neither of which is lit |
| Possible route variations: | For a shorter route of approx 7.5 miles, or in the dark, just miss out Harberton Mead as the up, and go up John Garne Way instead, then run to the top of Headington Hill to start the next down. This takes out two hills and two descents, but makes it a more reasonable distance!
For the real hardcore, you can also add: Run around to Halliday Hill on Northway and then back down Saxon Way (half a hill)...and... Run up Ambleside Drive, down Eden Road and back up Headley Way. These will bring the distance in over 11 miles and make it 10 ascents and descents, more if you also do them in reverse. Madness ! |
